What I’ve Learned About Life

Paragraph 1

【現】To my surprise, it was ‘he’ that helped me through the darkest hours in my life.【7+3畫解:強調句子某「部份」技巧I(廣東話按此)(普通話按此)】He was Johnson, whom I once thought no longer to be my bosom friend, but a general acquaintance only. 

關於人生，我學了什麼?   (原文【直譯】)

【現】出乎我的意料，是「他」幫助我走過人生的最黑暗時光。他叫Johnson，我曾想過不再當他是知心友，當他是泛泛之交吧！

Paragraph 2

He was a friend with a bit of gambling addiction, somewhat scruffy in appearance. I was upset with him when I found there was nothing I could do to change his way. Since then, we have not seen each other for about ten years. 

他是一位朋友—略有點賭搏癮，外表上多多少少不修邊幅。我當時感到對他非常憤怒，當我發現我無法做任何事去改變他的行徑。自從那一天，我們就一別十年，再也無見過。

Paragraph 3

For the past few years, I had been struggling with depression.   In the very beginning, I was good at concealing it from others, but later it pestered me so badly that I couldn’t stand it anymore. Tears automatically burst out of my eyes without legitimate reasons. 【7+3畫解：負轉正內容元素(廣東話按此)(普通話按此)】Nobody cared about me before meeting Johnson again. Yes, it was Johnson that consoled me all the way【7+3畫解：強調句子某「部份」技巧II(廣東話按此)(普通話按此)】, brought me to see the psychiatrist in time and my symptom stopped after medication. Without Johnson, I wonder I am still under the torture of melancholia. I regretted the decision I once made, that I treated him ‘a general acquaintance’. 

過往幾年，我跟抑鬱症一直在搏鬥。在初期，我在人前掩飾得非常好，但過了不久，這疾病很壞地纒擾著我，我實在難以撐下去。沒有任何合理原因，眼淚會自動從我眼框流下來。無人關心我，直到重新遇到Johnson。是的，就是Johnson 在一路上安慰著我，及時帶我見心理醫生，而我的徵狀在服藥後停止了。沒有Johnson，我懷疑我現仍在抑鬱症的折磨下。我對我曾作的決定—-當他是泛泛之交感到後悔。

Paragraph 4

【表】Life is a precious gift filled with valuable lessons we can learn, from childhood to adulthood. These were priceless discoveries that I found:

Paragraph 5

【理】Never judge a book by its cover.  It’s like going to a library and finding a book. You may go for the book with attractive colors and graphics but pass up the book that looks plain and colorless. However, if you look beneath the surface, a person or thing may be different from what you expect. Thank God for meeting Johnson again and let me know that he is such an affectionate person I have never thought of. It is my mistake that I often judge people by their physical appearances only, such as their skin color, their hairstyle or the way they dress in 【7+3畫解，不寫【這個in】可以嗎?(廣東話按此)(普通話按此)】.

 【理】不要只憑封面判斷一本書。（Never judge a book by its cover.) 

就好像去到圖書館要找書，你很可能會注意那本色彩和圖表都吸引的，而略過了那本看來樸實和色彩不鮮艷的。但是，如果你看得深層一點（look beneath the surface），人或物可能跟你期望的不同。感謝上帝讓我重遇Johnson及讓我知道他是一個有情有義的（affectionate）的人，這是我從來沒有想過的。是我的錯誤－－我常只憑外表判斷人，就如他們的膚色、頭髮的風格或他們的穿著。

Paragraph 6

【理】Everything happens for a reason.  Johnson thanked me for the past admonition I once gave him and he cherished the friendship with me because I once helped him out of a personal financial crisis a decade ago. To be honest, I already forgot the help I gave him but he still remembered it.【他】 It is true that ‘what goes around comes around!’

【理】事出有因。(Everything happens for a reason.)

Johnson有天因著我過去曾給他的勸戒(admonition)而向我道謝，並表示非常珍惜跟我的友誼，因為我十年前曾一度幫助他走出個人財務困境。說實話，我已忘記了我曾給他的幫助了，但他卻依舊記住。【他】「你怎對待別人，別人就怎對待你。」這話是真的。

Paragraph 7

【理】No one can make someone change without patience. Johnson told me that he had already got rid of the gambling addiction after a painful experience. It surprised me a lot! I admit that I am a judgemental person always trying to influence others to do what I think is ‘good’【7+3畫解：句型分【層次】處理技巧(廣東話按此)(普通話按此)】, without giving enough time to others for my intended change. Johnson taught me a lesson –  change has to come from within one’s self. This is one of the hardest life lessons for me to learn accepting ‘slow change’ because I always get frustrated when I waste my time criticising someone else’s thoughts or behaviour ‘too quickly’.

【理】沒有忍耐，沒有人能使一個人改變。（No one can make someone change without patience.）

Johnson 一天跟我說他已經戒掉賭搏癮了，經歷過一段痛苦經歷後。這大大出乎我意料！我承認我是一個批判的人，常常嘗試影響其他人去做我認為是「好」的事，而沒有給予足夠時間讓其他人作出我想要的改變。Johnson教導了我一課：改變必須源自一個人的內心。對我來說，這是其中一個人生最難學的功課－－接受「慢慢改變」，因為我經常感到挫敗當我浪費著時間「太快地」批判著一些人的思想和行為時。

Paragraph 8

【理】I don’t know someone unless I have walked in their shoes. Many people misperceive others without getting to know them first. Once upon a time, I might judge a person acting out emotionally, but actually I did misunderstand what they had been through.  Just because I got a life journey to fight depression, I knew the feelings of being criticized without sympathy, being isolated with pride and prejudice, and being lonely with nobody’s understanding.  【7+3畫解：parallelism的寫作技巧(廣東話按此)(普通話按此)】

【理】除非我走進他們的處境，否則我是不了解這些人。（I don’t know someone unless I have walked in their shoes.）

很多人對其他人　錯誤認知（misperceive）因為沒有首先去認識。曾幾何時，我可能會因一個人表現得情緒化，就批判一個人，但其實我是不明白他們當時正經歷著什麼。只因我經歷過一段對抗憂鬱症的人生旅程，我認識到「無同情而受批判」的感受、「因傲慢與偏見而造成的孤立」感、「因無人理解而造成的孤單」感。

Paragraph 9

【表】Life lessons are important because we gain valuable knowledge throughout our limited life span. With these invaluable lessons like this one, we can learn to live a better and more fulfilling life.

【表】人生課堂是重要的，因為我們在學到更多珍貴的知識，於我們有限的人生年月中。就像這樣的寶貴課堂，我們可以學習活出更好、更滿足的人生。
