請問一下在Prepositional phrases eg. of + noun, 如果當中的noun是countable, 是否應該變成plural form?
E.g 1. we base decisions on the analysis of the facts and the merits of the case.
E.g 2. employees are appointed on the basis of merit.

這裏的merit是否因為不同意思，所以Eg 2的merit才不用加s?

又例如我看到有些人寫 for record purpose，
但purpose是可數，是否應該改成record purposes?

這裏的merit是否因為不同意思，所以Eg 2的merit才不用加s?這裡加返S好點。因為countable noun 不加s, 不是不能，意味著有較abstract and generalized 的所指。

如cellphone at hand 而不寫a cellphone at hand 是因為cellphone 指的不單手電、包括網絡、apps 等。所以cellphone 就是generalized 了的countable noun, 前可不置a, an ,the。

又例如我看到有些人寫 for record purpose，
但purpose是可數，是否應該改成record purposes?

那就看目標是否明顯多過一個了。另外，如一個noun 前面被一個noun 【作定語】形容，如record purpose 的record 【名詞定語】，就一定要用singular 而不能用plural。
